Chelsea Campbell tied the game in the seventh inning with a RBI single to left field, and Anne Saville singled up the middle to drive in the winning run with two outs.

Codie Mitchell was walked by Virginia Intermont to load the bases for E&H. VanLear, a senior, singled to center field to score Lowry and Fenner and clinch the Wasps’ (1-5) first win on the young season.

Jared Surber scattered five hits over five innings for Emory & Henry, surrendering only one earned run. Freshman Will Dingus picked up the win in relief.

The Cobras took the second game by a count of 14-5, but E&H junior Nick Windom and freshman Eric Houff hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to make things interesting. The home run was Houff’s first of his college career.

Terrance Grigg nailed a turn-around floater in the lane with 5.5 seconds remaining to give the Wasps the win.

Grigg, a junior, finished with 17 points and nine rebounds for E&H. J.D. Dyson netted a game-high 21 points for the Wasps (3-19, 1-11 ODAC). Bobby Stafford dished out seven assists.

In a game that sported 15 lead changes and 10 ties, Emory & Henry found themselves down by as much as nine points early in the second half, but fought back to take the lead on clutch consecutive 3-pointers by Malcolm Green and Josh Cunningham. Green and Cunningham finished with eight and nine points, respectively.

The Tigers (11-11, 6-7 ODAC), however, also demonstrated their resilience. E&H took a 65-55 lead with less than three minutes to go, but Hampden-Sydney mustered a 14-4 run on three quick baskets and two free throws to tie the game at 69 with just seconds left in the game.

Emory & Henry shot an astounding 45.8 percent from 3-point range, knocking down six of 12 second half treys. Along with Cunningham and Green, Michael Owens and Jordan Short both added big threes off the bench.

Emory & Henry’s hardcourt struggles continued Saturday against Lynchburg College, as the Wasps suffered a 96-91 loss. A strong first half, during which Lynchburg outscored E&H 62-43, carried the Hornets.

Lynchburg finished with five scorers in double-digits and was led by senior Steven Echols, who tallied 36 points and made seven of nine 3-point attempts. Danny Reed finished with 16 points for the Hornets and Jeff Langrock, Nate Campbell and Brandan Connor each tacked on 10 points.

The Wasps were paced by forward Terrance Grigg, who netted 28 points. Jordan Short and J.D. Dyson added 22 and 18 points, respectively.

“We didn’t have any problems scoring,” said Short, a freshman. “We just couldn’t stop them… especially [Echols].”

Despite a disappointing first half result, the Wasps mustered an exciting comeback, cutting the deficit to three points (from 19 points at the half and 24 late in the first half) on two occasions. However, E&H was never able to gain the lead and the Hornets didn’t miss any free throws down the stretch.

“It didn’t matter if we fouled them,” Short said. “They were just going to go to the line and get two points there. That really killed us.”

Another stat that hurt the Wasps was rebounding. Lynchburg out-rebounded E&H 42-29, and outscored the Wasps 30-18 in the paint.

“We were almost there,” said Short. “We just couldn’t get over that hump.”

Things started out well for E&H, as Caleb Moore returned the opening kickoff to Bridgewater’s 36 yard line.
The Eagles’ Thomas Tate responded with a 15-yard touchdown run of his own, but Jennings found the endzone again in the first stanza, this time from five yards out, and the Wasps had a 14-7 advantage at the end of the quarter.

E&H’s next score came with 35 seconds remaining in the first half when Josh Castle hit receiver Fred George with a 63-yard TD pass. Halftime came with the score 20-10 in the Wasps’ favor.

The Wasps’ Twyla Sessor, a senior, notched 23 digs en route to setting an ODAC record with 1,794 digs for her career. The mark was previously held by Randolph-Macon’s Michelle Kutcher, who graduated in 2007.

The host Wasps won the first game 25-21, but lost the next two by a count of 21-25 and 23-25, respectively. Behind the defensive play of Sessor and Erin Holben, who recorded 13 digs, the Wasps held on to win the fourth game 25-23 and the fifth 15-10.

On offense, E&H was led by Rachel Fertitta, who had 23 kills and five blocks, and Kim Caudill, who registered 20 kills. Sophomore setter Ashley Masterson tallied 50 assists.

Wasps volleyball is next in action on Friday, when they host Southern Virginia University in the “Dig Pink” game, which will honor the College’s legendary basketball coach, the late Bob Johnson. Proceeds from the game will go to the Side-Out Foundation, a recreational volleyball organization formed to raise breast cancer awareness.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Emory & Henry football became only the seventh institution in the state of Virginia to win 500 football games in school history with the Wasps’ 28-3 victory over Methodist College. Three of E&H’s four touchdowns came on plays of more than 20 yards, as the Wasps offense looked fluid throughout the game for the first time this season.

The Monarchs (1-2) struck first with a 32-yard field goal on their first drive of the day, but E&H’s defense didn’t allow another Methodist score. The Wasps forced an interception and five turnovers-on-downs, including one fourth down sack on the E&H two yard line, to stifle Methodist’s offense through the remainder of the game.

Running back Caleb Jennings led Emory & Henry offensively, racking up 144 yards on the ground and finding the endzone twice. E&H signal caller Drew Piscopo completed 10 of 15 pass attempts for 110 yards, including a 26-yard touchdown heave to Brian Bush early in the third quarter.

Freshman ball carrier Javon Lucas tallied the final TD for the Wasps with a 54-yard saunter in the final stanza.

Emory & Henry, 4-0 and off to their best start since 1998, has two weeks to prepare for the also unbeaten Hampden-Sydney Tigers. That game will be played Saturday, October 10 at Fred Selfe Stadium in Emory.
