Brown to unveil prototype on sustainable community

March 24, 2009 | James Hairston | Comments 0

The sustainable environment development project that senior and environmental studies major David Brown has been working on is nearing completion.

Under the mentorship of Dr. Edward Davis, Brown has been working on developing a prototype for a socially and economically sustainable community. Brown’s prototype consists of a circular design that places a pond, greenspace and community center in the center of surrounding homes.

Brown believes that with the design of his community, he will help advance the ideas of sustainability and foresight in development.

“Emory & Henry showed me a problem that existed in our world and gave me the base of knowledge that I needed to try to change this problem,” Brown said.

Although there are not many successful sustainable communities at the time, scientists are constantly working for improvements.

Brown said, “I’m just trying to think of a simple solution that would be economically viable and even have some social benefits.”

Sustainable communities seek to improve the health of residents while using resources to meet the needs of human beings and making sure that these resources are available for future generations. Brown said that a sustainable community is one that is “meant to last forever, without degrading its surroundings.”
