Emory & Henry Makes Plans to Upgrade Fred Selfe Athletic Stadium

February 17, 2009 | James Hairston | Comments 1

Fred Selfe Athletic Stadium getting a facelift.

With the completion of phase 1 of building the new facility, phase 2 is in the near future. Phase 1 included the installation of artificial turf, new scoreboard and closed fencing. The next step involves choosing an architect that will design the new renovations for the project.

Phase 2 of the rebuilding process includes building a new field house that will have home and visitor locker rooms, offices, classrooms, a training room and a new press box. Upgrades will be made to home and visitor seating areas also. The field house is going to be placed at the entrance of the stadium.

Athletic Director Bob Johnson said that the stadium will be “done in such a way that it fulfills our needs while also maintaining a sense of tradition at Emory & Henry.”

The stadium is used for men’s and women’s soccer, football and intramural sports.

Head football coach Don Montgomery said that without alumni, the construction of the stadium would not have been possible. More than $3.5 million has been donated for the $4.5 million campaign.

“The alumni rose to the challenge in honor of Coach Fred Selfe to put this stadium down in less than a year and I have never seen that happen in any other place I have worked at,” Montgomery said.
