Complete Racial Acceptance Is Wanted At E&H
There have been a series of racial outbreaks on the Emory & Henry campus this year. Faculty sent school-wide e-mails stating that they are not going to tolerate any type of racial issues. The way things have been going on, it seems like it’s the 1950s or ‘60s, not 2008. When people are saying that they don’t deserve to have the same advantages as others, life at Emory & Henry is hard. The situation is hard for African-American men because the same issues become even harder for other minorities.
When situations like this occur, minorities aren’t going to want to come to this college, and the current minorities might not even want to stay here. It’s a shame because this college has so much to offer to every student here, no matter what his or her race is. College is also about learning and growing; when a student is worried about not learning or growing because he or she is worried about other issues, this person is not living the full college experience. A student should be able to pay the tuition to go here and not be worried about racial problems. Everyone should be able to be him- or herself and accepted by everyone else as well. If students feel that they are not getting this experience from Emory & Henry, they shouldn’t be here.
When we lose minorities, we are losing as a college because we are losing the diversity that all colleges should have. The friends of different races some people have don’t see African-Americans for the color of their skin; they see them for their personalities. Some students should take note and learn from these people who accept African-Americans as they are.

Well said. I couldent agree more, although I do think the local area has issues with racism. For some of the local students attending EHC, this could quite possibly be the first time that they have had to be with any kind of ethnic person. It has to be an issue of poor education towards the rest of the world. I have noticed very much so that this part of the world is quite cut off. But, doesnt seem to welcome change. Some of the comments I heard over the election could only be discribed as disturbing. It is very sad that some people are so ignorant that they can only see colour in people. If colour means that much to these types of people then they must know that we all bleed the same colour!
